I love starting my day with a healthy protein smoothie for an instant dose of energy and nutrients, but lately my repertoire has been feeling a little stale.

Imagine my delight when the inspiration struck to create a protein smoothie recipe that combines the health benefits of a protein shake with the flavors of everyone’s favorite fall dessert, pumpkin pie. I wanted to come up with a pumpkin protein smoothie that tastes just like a slice of pie.

Why you will love this pumpkin protein smoothie:

  • Creamy Texture: This is an undoubtedly creamy  proteinsmoothie with an extra thick and satisfying consistency thanks to frozen banana.
  • Flavor:  This pumpkin pie protein smoothie tastes like your classic Thanksgiving pumpkin pie dropped into a blender. You have pumpkin puree, pumpkin pie spice, with lots of cinnamon,  plus a hint of vanilla.
  • Ease: Smoothies are so simple because it’s usually just a matter of placing ingredients into a blender and blending until smooth.
  • Health: The thing I love most about this Pumpkin Spice Protein Smoothie is that it contains 50 fewer calories than a tall pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks while packing in far more health benefits thanks to omega-3 rich flaxseeds and protein powder.

This delicious beverage is not only high in protein, but also a good source of potassium, fiber and omega 3’s. And those warming spices are not just there to enhance flavor- cinnamon, nutmeg and fresh ginger are known to boost immunity, aid in digestion, prevent inflammation and reduce fatigue and stress. So drink up!

Tips:

  • To get your pumpkin pie protein shake to the perfect smooth texture, you need something high-powered
  •  Instead of prepared pumpkin pie spice, I just added some cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and vanilla.
  • The ground flax seeds not only add a healthy dose of omega-3 but also help thicken the smoothie. You could add ground chia seeds for the same effect.
