One of my most popular posts to date is the Pumpkin Spice Protein Shake that I created as a sort of healthy dupe to the omnipresent pumpkin flavored madness that descends upon us every Fall.
I love making protein shakes in the morning- they’re quick, filling, and depending on what you put in them, pretty darn nutritious. All in all, not a bad way to start the day.
But I have to admit, protein shakes can get pretty boring if you just stick to the same old tried and true combinations.
So I wanted to try out another vegan protein shake recipe that would elevate the protein shake from blah to BOMB.
Enter this vegan birthday cake protein shake.

I’ve seen cake batter milkshakes out there that look sinfully delicious, so my challenge was to capture that essence in a healthier vegan protein shake recipe.
The milkshakes usually rely on boxed cake mix to achieve the cake flavor and ice cream for the creamy frozen factor.
To give this cake batter milkshake a healthy makeover I substituted vanilla protein powder and a touch of vanilla and almond extracts for that cake-like flavor, as well as frozen banana.
So, okay, maybe rainbow sprinkles are not the most nutritious way to kick start your day, so feel free to skip if you’re a stickler.
But all those colorful little specks peeking out through the vegan protein shake just add the perfect festive touch, don’t you think?
Everything in this healthy birthday cake protein shake is vegan, even the whipped cream if you opt to make a coconut milk version like I did.
With a good dose of protein and potassium all for around 200 calories this is a smart breakfast choice that will make you feel like a 6 year old whose mom just let them lick the batter off the spatula.

- Go easy on the almond extract and start with a little, adding a tiny bit more if you feel it needs it.
- For best results, use a high-speed blender. Before serving, make sure the frozen banana slices are completely blended!
Variations on this Cake Batter Protein Shake recipe:
- Vanilla Cashew Milk also works perfectly fine for this protein shake recipe. Just make sure there is no sugar added.
- Don’t like bananas? Try frozen mangos instead! The protein shake will taste less like cake batter and more like a slice of mango cake but what’s not to love about that, right?
- Feel free to add some beet juice to give it a pretty pink hue!
What is the best vegan protein powder?
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the number of vegan protein powders available nowadays. When buying your protein powder, check out these three things on the nutrition label:
(1) Grams of sugar per serving, (2) grams of protein per serving, and (3) any additional preservatives or flavorings that are listed.
Keep is as natural as possible.
Also, pay attention to the source of the protein–especially when it comes to soy! Though soy products are healthy if unprocessed, and/or fermented, it is best to limit your consumption of processed soy products, as they are hard to digest and offer fewer nutrients.

Vegan Birthday Cake Protein Shake
A vegan protein shake recipe made with mostly healthy, all vegan ingredients is a festive way to energize your mornings!
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup frozen banana slices
- 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
- 1 packet vanilla protein powder
- 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract
- 1/4 tsp. almond extract
- 1 tsp. rainbow sprinkles
- whipped cream for garnish (use whipped coconut cream to keep it vegan!)
Instructions
- Add all ingredients except sprinkles to a blender and blend until well combined. Add sprinkles and pulse 2-3 times to incorporate.
- Pour into a glass and garnish with whipped cream.
