If you’ve ever had an Aperol Spritz, you know what a refreshing and effervescent cocktail it is. It has basically been dubbed the unofficial cocktail of the summer for the last couple of years. What is Aperol?

The base of any Aperol Spritz is Aperol, an aperitif. Fun fact: its name comes from the French slang word for aperitif, which is apero. An aperitif is a drink (typically alcoholic, and dry/bitter in flavor) that is normally served before a meal.

Aperol is bright orange in color with a bittersweet taste deriving from the infusion of a blend of high-quality herbs and roots.

The difference between an Aperol Spritz and a Winter Aperol Spritz is just a few ingredients

A traditional Aperol Spritz is made from Aperol, Prosecco, and Sparkling water poured over ice and garnished with an orange wedge.

But with a few seasonal ingredient modifications you can easily have a winter version of this popular cocktail!

Here’s what you’ll need to make a winter spritz:

  • Aperol
  • Pomegranate juice (cranberry juice would also work!)
  • Prosecco
  • Sparkling water or club soda

For the garnishes, a grapefruit wedge, a sprig of rosemary and a few pomegranate arils give this cocktail its wintery vibe.

This is quite possibly one of the simplest cocktails to make, since no mixing, stirring or shaking is required! Fill a glass with ice and top with ingredients in the order that they are listed in the recipe, followed by the garnishes. By layering the ingredients in this order, the Winter Aperol Spritz takes on a lovely gradient hue that reminds me of a vibrant winter sunset!
